Major PS3 titles missing launch date

According to SCEE CEO David Reeves, quite a few top-notch PlayStation 3 titles will not be making the launch date of November 17. Here is the status of the titles he mentioned:

Singstar will be released "certainly before Christmas."
An EyeToy game will be available after Christmas; "EyeToy is not playable at the moment, but it will come before March 2007."
Heavenly Sword, Formula One, and Motorstorm will not come out until "after Christmas."
Resistance: Fall of Man "will certainly be a launch title."

We're at a bit of a loss as to guessing what 15 titles will make the PS3 launch, and we don't think Reeves has any more of clue either (Computer and Video Games.com predicts Resistance and "14 versions of head-to-head Carol Vorderman's Sudoku"). Reeves told CVG that Sony has "built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even it didn't have games." Whether or not he is right, we hope for Sony's sake that they don't test that theory come November 17.

I guess that some of those won't make Europe in time for launch, and some will just be delayed anyway. Not a particularly good lineup, better than the PS2's in 2000, but probably worse than the xbox360's last year, and nowhere near the Wii's this year (Zelda at launch? Hells yeah!).

There's also the question that probably shouldn't be asked, but I'll ask anyway...

mgs4 and ff13 were never launch titles. The new allusion chap posted a decent launch, nothing exciting, just as pretty much all launches. I thought when sega dreamcast was launched, it had pretty decent line-up.

Journalism is in a nutshell, any news that sells, post it. Mainstream, sidestream and backstream are doing the same. The price's an easy target. This is a blogger site, means it depicts the opinion of blogger. Anyone aren't happy, feel free to keep clear. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of ps3 sites around.

But you have to admit, all this bashing's getting boring...

Quickie at #1

No one expects either of those titles to be ready by launch, mgs at least has a sticker of Q3/Q4 '07, I wouldn't think ff13 would come out any sooner, though with their history I would bet it doesn't hit US shores untill '08. Heavenly Sword is probably slated for a mid '07 release also. Now despite being a Sony fan I think it's safe to assume at this point that '06 through November of '07 will be Microsoft and Wii leisure time, but after that point Sony should be in the game with tripple A titles hitting one after another.

Also a sidenote, Resistance and Warhawk have the potential to be really good games, though theres mostly a split between those who like them or hate them, I think they'll do nicely at launch. I wouldn't be so fast to throw away Tekken or Sonic out the door either.

From the list that new allusion put up is there any game to spend $700 (Tax + Game) for?!? Ports...ports...and more ports!! Console sellers like MGS4, FFXIII (uh...do you guys know FFXII has not even been put out yet?), and God of War 2 are late 2007.

Lost Planet is playable now and it will not be out for another year. Sometimes it takes time to polish games. Even if they look good now but wait and they will look great later.

Now Im still waiting on mt Grand Torismo for my PSP. Wasnt that supose to be a "soon after launch game" for the PSP?

Well, I know Sony is getting bashed quite regularly lately but if I recall the 360 got bashed pretty hard at the start also.

Look, these things are going to happen, Sony has put a big target on their backs being in the number one position for so long, and they seem to be giving everyone plenty of ammo . . . it's going to be used. Hey, I'm no marketing genius but I can't say that I'm really convinced in Sony's strategy.

Sony is looking and acting a little over confident. I think they are basing this confidence in their projected first place finish in Japan. They need to realize they could be in serious trouble in every other market. Carrying Japan isn't going to be enough.

#16: While on one hand I agree with you, I think it's safe to say that Sony basically have the Japanese market sewn up. And that's big, when you consider that there is one major territory that Sony will ALWAYS have over Microsoft, no matter how well the 360 does.

And let's face it, a lot of the big developers are Japanese - Capcom, Namco, Sega... Whilst they're likely to support the 360 as long as it's numbers remain high in the US, the PS3 will always be top on their list of priorities.

Which is not to say that Nintendo won't do well in Japan, but it's a two-horse race over there now, and since the Wii is easily affordable, Nintendo's success won't put a dent in Sony's market penetration - unless you know of more than one or two Japanese gamers who wouldn't happily mortgage their 2'x 4' apartment for 5 minutes on Final Fantasy XIII?

I know Sony pretty well and i'm sure they will have atleast a few good titles worth purchasing at launch !! They have to...it wouldn't make any sense to launch a system before there were any fun games to play on it !!!! Just wait till the developers figure out how to utilize the systems full power......just like with the ps2...it took a while , but they had some damn good games (games that have sold more than any other titles). Once they figure that out..which wont take as long as the ps2 did....the games will deffinately be more massive and emmersive than any other console can produce !!!

Seriously, "Lair" looks like a great game. Or am I being hyped up? Flying dragons!! lol

I know Xbox360fanboy bashed Motorstorm for not looking as good as it did in E32005. But from GDC to E32006 there was a major improvement, even when the dev kits have been barely finalized if they are indeed (THQ doesn't even have one that is finalized). Anyway, I wasn't as impressed with motorstorm as I am with other titles, but damn... that game has seriously improved, look at the last video when an object comes real close... it looks great... And they have 6 more months to work on that game.

The problem with some next-gen games is that most of the graphical greatness isn't noticed till you Zoom in, but when you do, it's awesome.

Then again, when you zoom out on Heavy Rain, it looks absolutely real. When I saw the trailer, "Oh fuck, a commercial" came through my mind. I thought it was advertising when in fact, it was the damned video!

Anyway, I'm excited. *boots summons PS3*!

The huge problem is that the PS3 appears to be losing it's exclusives at a fast rate.

Several developers have said they are unhappy with Sony and Microsoft's demands for HD gaming.

The wii is on the other hand getting tons of exclusive.

Tramua Center Wii and Cooking Mama wii and Bob Ross will get a lot of people to buy the console.

Think about it the DS has came along with tons of fun games and is going to get more hot as the years go by.

That same concept is going into the wii. Developers are excited about the wii they aren't about the PS3 or 360.

Of course it will sell. The question is to whom?

Imagine there's 5 million people looking at getting a new console when the PS3 launches. Now imagine there's only 2 million PS3s. Whereas in the past the first 2 million people would get the PS3s, and the remaining 3 million would wait a few weeks/months for the systems to get restocked.

Now, with the price and the lack of almost anything attractive at the PS3 launch, maybe now of those first 2 million people, only 1 million will buy a PS3, and the other 1 million will buy a 360. Of the remaining 3 million consumers, maybe 1 million of those people choose to get a Wii, 1 million get the remaining PS3, and the remaining 1 million wait for more PS3s.

Do you see what I'm saying? Sure, the initial consoles will sell. But at the same time, the relative failure that is the PS3 launch will undoubtedly put more 360s and Wiis in the homes of people who previously probably would have settled for the next PlayStation. So while Sony's sales might not suffer in the short term right after launch, sales will almost undoubtedly take a hit later on.

All of the E3 best of show awards for Console are going to 360 games...Gears of War, BioShock, Mass Effect. If it's all about the games...people will definately pass on the PS3. Unfortunately it's not all about the games. There are a sad bunch that will continue to wait till Fall 2007 before the PS3 delivers anything worthwile. 2/3 of PS3 lineup are EA games or multiplatform games that will also be on 360. The other 1/3 wont make it to launch.

360 owners have been enjoying great games for some time now...and come this fall...the 360 will have all the must have titles. Before Sony ever gets up to speed with AAA titles...Gears of War on Xbox Live will remind everyone of Sony's failings in the OnLine dept...and then Boomshockalocka!...Halo3 drops in summer of 2007 along with the Halo Theatrical release. By then MS will far have sold at least 12-15 million consoles. The few remaining PS3 exclusives will diminish even further. And by then Blu-Ray will be just about getting some traction...or a self realized complete failure.

Ahem Ubisoft. You can be sure other developers are thinking the same thing. HD takes far more RAM and money then SD. No one really has come up with the tools to write HD games as easily as SD games. Five years would be far better for HD gaming. More HD tvs around the world.

As for multi-cores guess what no one has built a multi-core game that works better then the same game writting for a single core processor.

For pcs yes multi-core is usefull due to the huge number of background tasks. Ever run a virus scan while playing a game? Or surf the web? Do a lot of things and the comp slows slows down to a crawl. Have a dual core and the slow down is drastically lessened.

Games are not as complex as a pc running all those tasks. No one has demonstrated even a minor improvement for writting a game on a multicore. Heck some pc games had a problem with dual core pcs. We don't even know if every playstation 1 and 2 game can run on the PS3. They may not be able to unless they get some recoding like those pc games.

It won't make a jot whether the PS3 launches with any games at all, people want it, games or not.
Gaming fascists may say otherwise but Sony and PlayStation are the current owners of the console gaming market and everyone knows that, like it or not.
People may think Sony is taking a risk with the PS3 but the customers know they aren't taking a risk by buying it - it's the PlayStation.

Some of you here have made excellent comments, especially number 16. I remember a year ago when the topic was the 360. If I recall they had little if any games playable at last years E3, dev kits were not all delivered, and they had just broken the perceived 399.99 price ceiling. Why the hate now on Sony for doing the same thing. I bought my 360 for what was going to come, not for Condemned or King Kong or Kameo. Ghost Recon and Oblivion came out months later, and as long as they have something coming within months of launch they are okay. And do not forget, Sony has much they have not shown. Last years e3 for Ms sucked eggs, but this year they came with it. Gears, Mass Effect, Too Human, and others. It's possible that Sony will show Devil May Cry, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Grand turismo, Tekken, Castlevania, and others. One E3 does not make a sysytem. and as for Nintendo, they always make innovative stuff, but they are the only ones that make money on their consoles, and i see history repeating itself.

The 200 million that bought the PSX and 100 million that bought the PS2 will disagree and surely more than 50 Million PS3s will sell guaranteed.

You are ignorant if you think it will be a stone cold flop and lose anything or any ground.

The Nintendo consoles have ALWAYS been cheaper, and both generations (PSX/PS2 they were last in sales). So price doesnt matter to people, it is the bradn that does. And Sony will still deliver the games they are known for.

There was plenty of games on teh XBox and PS2 at the same time and it still did not stop people from buying the PS2, hell it took up until last month for the PS2 not to be outsold and that was with the 360.

What does this even mean? I think you are one of those who is all caught up in the "HD Revolution!". I've been playing games at higher than HD resolutions on my computer for years now. 1280x1024 on most games, then my widescreen monitor at 1280x768. And this is on a computer that really isn't that powerful. Of course developers can write games that support high resolutions at high framerates. A friend of mine plays F.E.A.R. at 1920x1200 (which has more pixels than 1080p) on his computer and its fluid and perfect.

okay, back on topic. the SCEE CEO is a jackass for saying such comments about the automatic 5 million units that will be sold, regardless of software library.

Well, I'm telling you all now, I played PDZero tonight. It's supposed to be the uber for FPS? I think it's uber crap. I'll stick to my PC for FPS games. Then again, I never liked FPS on the console. It doesn't feel right. If MS is going to push their console to that market (as the game titles tend), I lean more toward the PS3. I played two of the arcade games tonight as well, including Geometry wars. Fun, but...eh, it was ok. Burnout was a riot, but I should be able to get that for the PS3 to go along with Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy. I think I pretty much made up my mind when I played the XBox360 tonight. The only thing I worry about is the PNP network. MS did alot of cool things with XBL, but I don't know if I'd buy the system just for that. I especially liked the 360s ability to play music of your own over the games, but again I can always dual source my stereo and actually get my money's worth out of it. I'll have to see what Sony does with the interface more than that lame video floating around.

When you understand the market, developers that don't do exclusive titles will code the games for one system, throw the code in a compiler and if it works on the other system not much else happens. They aren't going to beef it up to utilize the PS3's extra cores, so only exlusives will truly utilize the full power. Either way, I seriously think I'm going to wait till spring and get in line for a PS3.

Yeah, that was a little rant, but I seriously can't see what this all-holy 360 craze is about. I liked the controller, the headset was cheap, the game system doesn't fit with anything else in my stereo rack (I know, minor issue, but white? Come on MS!), the only game I played and truly enjoyed was already cross platform, and the one game that is supposed to shine had me barfing from nausea. Instead of flaming each other, give the other system a try at least and see if you change your mind. I'm waiting to see how the PS3 comes out, but again my target is floating that way.

Yeah, try some good games. I don't think I've heard anyone calling PDZ the "Uber FPS" It's a Halo killer like Killzone and Black is. You had to be listening to Pre-release Hype. Every review says, it's weak, but is saved by Multi-play. CoD2 was the big FPS of the 360 launch. But that's not even important. Most uf us are enjoying games like GRAW, Oblivion, PGR, FN3, And DoA4. Then there is the demos for great titles like Lost Planet.. which is a blast to play.

Fewer and Fewer games are going to be exclusives because of the cost of Next-Gen games.

And Who in the world is going to buy a console for "Trauma Center, Bob Ross, and... Cooking Momma?" I don't see where you get that train of thought.

And Yes, the whole "HD era" game thing.. Yeah.. Most people for some reason think of 3D games like 2D games.. You don't store a new version for HD.. it's just upping the pixels used to draw a computer generated scene. The Television resolution has nothing to do with the detail inside the game. But the cost does come in the expectations of the gamers.

Every day, I pray Sony haven't taken another shot aty their foot, but here's today's story. Killer PlayStation-sellers such as singstar and Eyetoy (maybe not in the US, but we love it over here in Britain) will not be on the shelves at launch. And of course, Motorstorm. It looks to be one of the best rcing games on the planet, a kind of off-road Burnout. But now THAT's gone.

All that's left are ports and EA Sports games. For a console that desperately needs some unbelievable games at launch to ease the pain of the price, they're not going a good way about it.

What next? Controllers are an optional extra?

Sony has a perfect opportunity to mix both Playstation 2's games with Playstation 3's and create one hell of a launch line up. Given that numerous Playstation 2 games are coming out during that period such as Okami and Final Fantasy XII, it'd be a fantastic opportunity for Sony to sign some sort of deal with the publishers to promote the Playstation 3's backward compatibility. Sort of like E3 2005 where Square Enix presented, at the Sony Press Conference showing the PS3, showed a trailer of FFXII and emphasized that it would be playable via the backwards comaptibility.

It'd be sort of like Nintendo's launch of Twilight Princess, only much more diverse. But given Sony's idioticy recently, I doubt they'd embrace such a golden opportunity.

Atleast I can expect some Riiiiiidge Raaaaaacccerr!

Yes...but devs have to spend time to make games look good in HD. So basically, if you have a SD TV, like 100% of the TV owning population has, all that dev time and effort was absolutely pointless.

Devs are complaining because of the amped cost of producing a game to meet astronomical preset guidelines.

As for all this stupid MS vs Sony fanboy nonsense...honestly guys, what can the PS3 do that he 360 can't on the gaming level? Really? Play Tilt a Whirl? That's why I'm gonna buy a Wii actually...

No doubt PS3 will sell. BluRay...rah rah! In terms of games, I just don't see any reason why I shouldn't get a 360 RIGHT NOW. Sonic is out for both...GTA IV will be out for both...Madden, future Burnout games, etc...etc...etc...Why you ask? Because in order for devs to maximize profits to cover HUGE dev costs, they'll make every game they possibly can cross-platform.

What Sony really needs is just one really awesome, first party game that showcases the power of the PS3 at launch. That has always been a solid strategy for new consoles. Remember what Mario 64 did for the N64? Or what Halo did for the Xbox? Those games got people's attention and sold consoles.

That's what was missing from the 360 launch. I think they expected PDZ, CoD2 and PGR to do it but none of those games individually was really a killer app at all.

Even so, I'm sure the PS3 will sell just fine. As pompous a statement as that "5 million" remark was, it was probably accurate. I think there are enough Joe Consumers out there who have been planning to get the PS3, that 5 million could be easily sold before they even realize that there aren't any exceptional games for it. And by the time that realization hits, there will be, so it doesn't matter. Sony can count on high initial demand for the PS3 regardless of the quality of the games. They're safe as long as they don't bank on that in the long run, which I'm sure they won't.

That's pretty much what happened with the 360 launch, too. The quality of the initial game lineup is debatable but by the time supply caught up with demand there were several awesome games to choose from. PS3 won't be any different.

On a different note... who will buy a Wii because of Trauma Center, Cooking Mama, or Bob Ross? I will. Trauma Center for the DS was the reason I bought that system. That game is freaking awesome and a really refreshing break from sports games and FPSs. You should try it, you'll like it. I paint myself and love Bob Ross. That game could be fun, IMO. And Cooking Mama? My wife would love that. And THAT is good for me.

(if you want realistic graphics.... go look out a window... its got infinately more detail than ps3,xbox,wii,and a pc combined. and oh look... all i have to do is push a button and.. WOW i jump!!!! AMAZING. and yeah i dont know if you heard this but... sony has implemented gimmiky crap in their system to try to copy nintendos innovation) seriously dude..grow up and get over yourself.

back to topic i would expect delays like this and a shortage of games all through the life of ps3 seeing as it is so much harder to develop for and takes much more time to create the mich higher polygon counts...

But i don't think that the games are not such a problem. Sony has enough potential fanboys that would even consider buying the PS3 just to have a Blue-Ray player. M-maybe the PS3 will succeed where the PSP fails: selling movies.

About that Zelda: a good game stays a good game, only beauty fades.

Just want to note, I really don't think SingStar is going to affect Playstation 3 sales; it's a PS2 title, unless Sony lied about it at E3, in their E3 press materials, and on the official SingStar website that's already up.

@ShaleX: Maybe I did play a bad game or two, but here's my thought process be it bad or good: Final Fantasy, God of War, and Gran Turismo are enough of a reason for me to justify getting a PS3. I'd say that exclusivisity sells the system.

I can't stand FPS on the console, never have, and probably never will. Halo, PDZ, COD, whatever...They won't get me.

All this anti-PS3 hype has me actually digging for information and seeing that the system isn't as bad as everyone paints. It actually sound much cooler.

As far as cross-console games are concerned, I'm not worried. They will perform as good if not better on one system or another. The exclusives have the potential to really shine on the PS3, and the XBox360 has nothing to ride on but the Live service features.

Not to mention the price difference is a whole $20 when you add the Hard Drive, WiFi, and Live service to the 360.

The Linux support (which I think MS "might" be a little worried) will put developers on a Linux gaming angle thus improving it's market share (which I think it's about damn time).

I never used force feedback or rumble, so I won't be missing that.

The Blu-Ray drive gives the exclusives room to grow.

It's all adding up to a good thing. The only problem people are having as far as I see are nitpicky reasons and some hard-on to try to prove that the $500-$700 they already spent won't go to waste. Trust me, it won't. Microsoft is dumping alot of money at the XBox. It will suceed one way or another. If it's not good games, it will sell through MS brute force.

I have a baaaad feeling about this!

If the PS3 has no impressive launch titles it is seriously in the sh1t. Its bad enough that BluRay is being forced down gamers throats, its also very expensive for a games console. Its no more powerful than the Xbox 360. It is ugly. Ken is an arrogent Arshole & treats gamers with dis-respect. Add to that the PS3 is suffering from an identity crises! -is it an Entertainment hub? a Linux PC? a HD disc player? the next messiah? or Sony's Bitch.
Yesterday I spent an hour trying to explain to a colleage at work the difference between the Core & Premium PS3 & I succeeded.................in confusing him even more!
The sumtotal of all this is DOUBT!

Which one should I buy (Core/Premium)?
Will my DVD's play on BluRay & What the hell is BluRay?
Will my son/daughter be able to use this, it looks really complicated?
My son/daughter wanted a games console, is this a games console?
Is this a mainstream console? or is it only for the enthusiast? (Neo-Geo & 3DO)
Its very expensive & there aren't many games for it - OMG HOW MUCH DID YOU SAY THE GAMES ARE!

Unlike the last two generations, Sony has some serious competition:-

The cheaper Xbox 360 has been around for a while, is selling quite well & has plenty of good games to choose from. Because the 360 is as visually capable as the PS3 from a gaming perspective, it is hard to justify buying the more expensive PS3. Also you can bet the PS3's games will be more expensive too.

The Nintendo Wii. The quintessential games console that everyone has been talking about since E3. The console itself is small & quite trendy looking. It has the coolest controller ever created but most importantly its cheap. Being able to afford games with your console is a big incentive - & thats something many people wont be able to do with the PS3 without breaking the bank! What could hurt Sony even more is if Nintendo get their Wii out (sorry) earlier than the PS3. Because of the farce surronding the PS3 & the consequent respect it has lost gamers are less likely to 'hold out' for it anymore & will opt for the Wii or Xbox360 or indeed, both!

Just to make clear I'm not anti-Sony! I like playstation & will hopefully buy a PS3 when its price drops (a lot). The question for me is will the Playstation brand survive Sony's rape of it? I fear Sony will go belly-up if the PS3 does not sell well in its first year.
